Effective monitoring of rail wear: solution overview
December 18, 2024
Centric IT Solutions Lithuania addressed a critical issue in the Netherlands’ busy rail network: monitoring rail wear. With high train traffic causing rapid rail deterioration, current methods, which rely on ultrasonic sensors and cameras, have proven ineffective, as they miss minor defects and require manual review. A more accurate, efficient solution was necessary to prevent costly, traffic-halting failures.
The solution involved mounting Axle Box Accelerometer sensors on train wheels to capture vibrations and accelerations, allowing for precise detection of defects as small as 4 mm. Data collected from these sensors is then visualised in real-time through ArcGIS, helping engineers quickly assess rail conditions without the need for manual video analysis. This innovative system reduces human error, leading to significant cost savings and more reliable rail maintenance.
